Day 1

A biome is a area of land where organisms are able to maintain live and reproduce. All biome's are different whether we are referring to the the climate, geology, or environment. Depending on these factors you can have different organisms living there and adapting . For example fish have adapted to water and have grown fins over the years.

What is a biome?

Day 2

Crystal Cave Map (2).jpg

Our biome that we traveled to was a cave in Pennsylvania.  A variety of Gemstones, emeralds, or fossils can be found in the gave but it is more of a tourist attraction. Caves are dark places made of dissolving rocks that take thousands of years to make. Rock dissolves deeper and deeper into the ground until the land starts to concave downwards. They are some of the coolest nature made attractions around.

How are caves formed?

day 4

The above picture is a picture of the food chain that goes on in caves. This picture will give everyone a better understanding of how the food chain in caves work, and it will give you an idea how the ecosystem is in caves. You can get a good idea of the ecosystem with this picture, because if you look at the picture and see all the animals in the cave and what animals eat other animals, you can picture in your head how the environment is with your knowledge on all the animals and your knowledge in caves. Most of the animals that are found in caves are small but there are a lot of them. Caves can be very scary and creepy with all the animals and bugs, not knowing where they are, how they might react, when they might do something and why they might do something. Ecosystems in caves usually have a lot of critters in it that most people don't know or like because caves have a lot of animals in it that they have never seen before. With that, you don't know how they will react when you walk past them or come upon them.

Day 3

Caves are found all around the world. They can be found in ground, under water, or on mountain sides.
They are found on all continents.

Krubera Cave, Georgia

Melissani Cave, Greece

day 5

Another producer that grows in caves is the fern. Ferns also require cool conditions and sunlight.

as you can see plants grow where ever sunlight is

Day 6

Everybody knows plants need sunlight to grow, so how are plants able to grow in caves? There is minimal sunlight in caves and the only place it can be found is in the beginning of the cave called the twighlight zone. It is easy for moss to grow in the beginning of caves because of their cool and moist atmosphere, the deeper into the cave you go the more constant the humidity becomes. Moss faces the sunlight on the rocks which is usually facing the entrance as seen below.
you can see the moss getting constant sunlight

day 7

raccoon9.jpgThere are a lot of mid level consumers in caves. The main one is the raccoon. Raccoons are everywhere in cave, just like bats. When we were walking through the cave while we were exploring, we came across a ridiculous amount of raccoons. Raccoons like caves because a lot of caves are very dark, wet and cold. When raccoons are not in caves, they only come out during the day. The reason they only come out for the day is because they thrive in the darkness and they do not like light. Raccoons are very creepy looking and they get very territorial. Raccoons do not like being around any people or animals, but other raccoons. Raccoons are very territorial so when you think of going near a raccoon, make sure you think twice about it!
